Artist's Biography

Deborah Butterfield, who lives and works in Montana, sculpts the horse as a means to explore human nature. The horse is a symbol of the American landscape and can represent freedom, beauty, courage, peace, and joy. Butterfield's sculpture, "Earth Measure" is made from found metal and stands in the Embassy as a symbol of partnership and understanding.

Butterfield was born in San Diego, California on May 7, 1949. She studied at the University of California, Davis and earned her B.A. in 1971; more recently she attended Montana State University in 1997. Her sculptures are presented in the Whitney Museum in New York City and the Israel Museum. From 1975-1976 Butterfield was an instructor at the University of Wisconsin and later taught at her former school, Montana State University. She was awarded a Guggenheim Grant in 1980. The Edward Thorp Gallery of New York and the Lieberman Gallery of Chicago are her current dealers.
